I think you can use the paint.net shadows plugins.I see you is using the white transparent.

For Headcrab:I think the headcrab front legs is hiding at body front side.Just start play Half - Life 1 and see the headcrab zombie (dont kill it!).

If it's not a resize why it has a lot of dark pixels around? why does it has a lot of disorganized (messy and whit collors that don't fit) pixels?
