But if you plan on making major changes to a map, if only for personal use, that's fine, as long as you aren't saving it with the same map name so as to use it as a "hacked" map. However, if you plan on releasing a renamed, editted map as your own, it is best to contact the original author first, if possible, and if not possible, give full credit to the original author.
However, there is no real legal issue with any of this because none of the CS2D maps are copyrighted in federal law. But it is still good to be respectful to the original author who has provided his work for free.

It depends I guess. If you simply edit the tileset and/or sprites, I see no problem. I have done that to de_dust myself by editting the dust.bmp tileset to have original CS 1.6 textures.

Alright Justin, thanks a lot. I was asking this because I made a tileset for all of the original maps in CS2D,(besides yours of course because I thought you would be offended ;).). Only problem is I've renamed every map that I made. I'll release them to the public when I make the changes and when my computer gets fixed. Thx again.

You can do it, with the authors agreement!
If you've edited a map from the original map author, and have submitted it here or at http://www.fpsbanana.com/ be sure to add credits to the original authors and from everybody else you've used anything from, so they don't feel left out lol.
You can modify my maps if you want, lol.
