I just got Fallout 3 in Steam (Not the GOTY Edition). When I click "New Game", the game crashes before I get to see the intro. I've tried what some Steam users suggested, like adding this line in the FALLOUT.ini in the documents,

1
2
bUseThreadedAI=1
iNumHWThreads=2

re-installing the game, using mods and verifying the game's files. I've tried those things and nothing worked. So is there a way to fix this crash?

I'm using Windows 7 and my graphics cards are Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M.

Also, New Vegas works perfectly fine but not FO3. I have some DLCs installed and some mods from NV Nexus in F:NV.

I'm guessing this is a laptop. Was is plugged in to AC supply or running off of your battery? Most laptops with dedicated cards switch to the Intel graphics when powered via battery, and I believe Fallout 3 is pretty shader-y, so it might be the cause. Nowhere near a surefire fix, though. Looks like it could be a driver issue.

@user DannyDeth: Yep, I'm using a laptop. It's plugged in into a power outlet.

So can I fix the graphics card other than repairing it to a shop?

Edit: I FIXED IT!!!

Thanks to this guy in Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198071746152

I did this and it worked for me, this was posted by BigBoyBuckley so I thought I'd share it:

1) install fallout 3 GOTY
2)Download this
https://www.dropbox.com/s/5ot8tm7szvlnuks/d3d9.dll
3)Then go to Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common and put the file into Fallout 3 goty
4)after that, go into Fallout 3 goty, right-click FalloutLauncher and select Properties, go to Compatibility, click "Change settings for all users", chech the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and change it to Windows 7. Click Apply
5)now Right-click Fallout3 (same folder as previous file) and do the exact thing but this time change it to Windows Vista (Service Pack 1)
6)now right-click Fallout3-Garden of Eden Creation Kit and do the same but the Compatibility for Windows 7
7)right-click GDFInstall and do the same thing but change the compatibility to Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
go into the VCRedist folder(found in the Fallout 3 goty folder), right-click vcredist_x86 and change the compatibility to Windows Vista.
9) go back to the Fallout 3 goty folder and go into DotNetFX, right-click dotnetfx3_x64 and change its compatibility to Windows 7
10) Download GFWL(Games for Windows Live)
http://www.xbox.com/en-CA/LIVE/PC/DownloadClient
11)now go into your Fallout3 folder(located in the Fallout 3 goty folder) open FalloutPrefs delete everything and paste all this in. There is a part within it where you have to input your own graphics card inbetween the quotation marks.

11-2) you might have to add some of the codes in and then click save
12)exit out and start your game, then change your Auto-save settings off(you will have to save manually for now on) then click NEW GAME.

That's it!!!
WARNING
SOMETIMES WHEN YOU TURN YOUR GAME ON IT WILL CRASH AS SOON AS YOU LAUCH THE GAME BUT ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOG-OUT AND RESIGN-IN AND TRY AGAIN. WILL WORK AFTER TWO OR THREE TIMES(who knows, you might just get in on the first try every time)

@user DannyDeth: Hey, at least you tried to help. Thank you.
